The Flourishing Future of Oregon Wine: Unlocking the Secret of Emerging Varieties and Regions
For those familiar with the verdant valleys and rolling hills of Oregon, you know that our state’s well-kept secret lies in the labyrinth of vineyards dappled across the landscape. Everyone from Dundee in the lush Willamette Valley to Milton-Freewater in the rocky hills of the Walla Walla Valley know of Oregon’s tremendous potential when it comes to winemaking. The rest of the world, however, is just starting to catch a whiff of the intoxicating aroma.
With the likes of Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris already putting Oregon on the global wine map, one would think our adventurous Oregonian spirit would merely hunker down and focus on what we’ve already perfected. Ah, but where’s the fun in that?
Step Aside, Pinot! Meet the Bold New Grapes in Town
Hold on to your fishing caps and rain boots, because the ever-curious, ever-resilient winemakers of our Beaver State are marching forth onto virgin terroirs, experimenting with new grape varieties and challenging the norms of international wine connoisseurship.
While Riesling and Chardonnay fanatics flock to the celebrated vines of the Eola-Amity Hills, savvy enthusiasts should set their sights on Southern Oregon’s Rogue and Umpqua Valleys. Nestled between the majesty of Crater Lake and the rugged Pacific coast, these regions are heralding what might very well be the future of Oregon wine – Tempranillo.
Arguably the darling of the Rogue Valley, Tempranillo is a feisty little grape that, much like our own Oregon Ducks, doesn’t back down against more touted opponents. Adverse to the rainy romp, Tempranillo thrives in the drier climate offered in Southern Oregon, offering a playful dance of earthy, spicy, and dark fruit notes. The aficionados among us may want to mosey down to Abacela or Schmidt Family Vineyards to experience these tantalizing flavors.
Rising High with High Elevation Viticulture
Oregon’s winemaking isn’t solely responding to the call of the wild grape varietals. Certain daring vintners have their eyes set skyward, harnessing the potential of high-elevation viticulture. What, a splash of wine with your hike at Mt. Hood? We’re not quite there yet, but this increasingly popular trend holds much promise.
Specifically, the burgeoning wine scene of Southern Oregon draws on its diversity of slopes and elevations to innovate. Down in the Elkhorn Mountains, near Baker City, these terroirs yield audacious wines with notable complexity and unique minerality. In these refreshing ‘nosebleed seats’, wine growing takes on a heady new dimension, with promises of flavors as breathtaking as the local views.
Exploring Unchartered Flavors in the Gorge
But wait, there’s more! It seems the seemingly tame Columbia Gorge, crisscrossed by mountain biking trails and windsurfing spots, couldn’t resist joining in on the grape escapades! Straddling the Cascade Range, vineyards here defy expectations, cherishing their unique microclimates between the wet west and dry east.
Most notably, emerging from these wild locales, is a grape not typically associated with American soil—Grüner Veltliner. An Austrian emigrant, it seems right at home in the Syncline Winery, putting out mineral-driven wines that match perfectly with our locally caught Columbia River Salmon. Want to taste that? Get yourself to Lyle, Washington side of the Gorge and ask about Syncline’s latest Grüner.
Wrapping Up This Grape Journey
This journey through Oregon’s wine landscape, suffused with local vitality, innovation, and rugged West Coast charm is one that we take together. As we peer into the future of Oregon wine, it’s clear that the horizon holds new grape varieties eager to dazzle our palates and unexplored viticultural regions brimming with promise.
That, my fellow Oregonians, is something thrilling to look forward to. So, grab your plaid flannel, fix a sturdy brimmed hat on your head, and prepare for a spirited exploration of Oregon’s ever-growing wine scene. Sláinte! The Palouse waits, the Rogue beckons, and there’s a world of flavor awaiting in every corner of our magnificent state.
