Oregon’s Quantum Leap into the Future: The Silicon Forest Expands
The heart of Oregon, like the steadily beating drum of a summer Powwow festival at the Confederated Tribes of Umatilla Indian Reservation, is one that is truly in sync with the natural vibrations of our planet. Adventure seekers from all around are drawn to a landscape where one can ski fresh snow at Timberline Lodge in the morning, then finish the day off surfing in the cool Pacific Ocean on Astoria’s beaches. Our kaleidoscopic sunsets skip over sand dunes and perpendicular cliffs, where seabirds, seals, and surfers vie for the best wave. In the distance, the Portland skyline soars, rising like Mt Hood on the horizon. In Oregon, we dance to precipitation rhythms and reside with celestially named streets. We find the balance between being mellowed out while continually striving for innovation.
And Oregon’s scientific community is no different.
Quantum Computing: From the Silicon Forest to the Universes Beyond
We’re living in extraordinary times on the Oregon Trail. Remember those elementary schools days playing in the computer lab, trying to survive dysentery and fording the river? Well, those days of pixelated pioneers are pretty far behind us now. The Silicon Forest – our tech cluster in the Portland Metropolitan Area – home to Trent, Intel, and more – is venturing into a catechistical dimension: quantum computing.
In the labs nestled between Rogue Ales & Spirits and In-N-Out (Yes, we do have burgers that are worth a 2-hour wait), scientists at the Oregon Quantum (OQ) initiative and other local Oregon institutions are exploring fundamental theories of quantum physics. The goal? To build a computer where information is not stored as the binary 1s and 0s of classical computing. Instead, a qubit – a quantum bit – can be both 1 and 0 simultaneously. If Willamette Valley pinot noir were to be a computer element, it would be the qubit.
The Changed Landscape: “Stay Weird,” Quantum Style
Just like Oregon’s weather, quantum computing can be difficult to predict. They say in Oregon, if you don’t like the weather, wait five minutes. Quantum computing, similarly, can shift radically and at neck-breaking speeds. It’s a new chapter in our Silicon Forest story.
The technology potential of quantum computing is like the depth of Crater Lake – we can see the vibrant blue on the surface, but there’s a much greater, yet unexplored depth beneath. If fully realized, quantum computing could lead to solutions for complex problems – be it climate change, cancer treatment, or traffic on the I-5 during rush hour on a rainy Friday.
In traditional Silicon Forest fashion, our state’s academia and businesses have come together to ease our shift into quantum. Our very own University of Oregon and Oregon State University are partnering with local industry players such as Intel and Trent, creating a symbiotic relationship that boldly thrusts Oregon into the quantum frontier.
Challenges? More Like Adventures in the Quantum Wilderness!
Oregonians are no strangers to extremes. We’re the birthplace of the Polar Plunge after all, diving headfirst into icy waters for good causes. Some of us even enjoy the thrill of winter surfing off the Oregon Coast. Quantum computing presents a similar adrenaline rush of excitement, coupled with a chilling unknown. And just like our explorations, together, we’re tackling quantum computing’s potential challenges: from quantum error correction to crazy concepts like superposition and entanglement. Of course, there’s also a need for a quantum version of Voodoo Doughnut’s Bacon Maple Bar!
Part of our Unique Oregon DNA
Our spruce-filled forests serve as a remnant of our pioneer history, an ode to our rich biodiversity, and a nod to our thriving tech culture. As we expand our Silicon Forest with quantum computing, we’re adding a new chapter to the rich tapestry of our Oregon story. Existing side by side, our unique geographical splendor and technological prowess make Oregon a quintessential destination for those yearning to carve out their own path in the new quantum frontier.
Oregon’s tryst with quantum computing isn’t merely about upgrading technology; it’s about continuing the very core of what makes us “Oregonians.” Just like our iconic Doug Fir treetops sway with the Pacific breeze while staying firmly rooted, we will collectively sway with the trends of technological innovation, yet stay firmly rooted in our love for our great state and for the world beyond it.
Whether it’s taking a peaceful hike along the Columbia River Gorge, or trying to wrap your mind around the complex theories of quantum physics, both leave you with that humbling sense of being part of something much more significant than yourself. And as we make these strides into the quantum world, we invite you to join us, learn about quantum computing, marvel at its complexities, and become part of this compelling chapter of Oregon’s story. Rediscover Oregon – where the forests meet the quantum future.
