Greetings, adventurer! Delighted you’re considering exploring the stunning trails of the Columbia River Gorge in Oregon, specially after our post-2024 wildfire recovery. Bountiful nature has sprung up in every trail, and it’s an invitation too compelling for any avid hiker to miss.
Wauna Point Trail – A Hiker’s Dream Revived
Wauna Point Trail, one of the lesser-known but truly beautiful trails had been temporarily closed due to the 2024 wildfires. Now reopened and restored, it promises a cascade of sensory experiences – sound of the wind shuffling through the spruce and fir trees, vibrant wildflowers dotting the route, the aroma of Oregon’s greenery, and stunning view of the Columbia River. Don’t miss the truly satisfying feeling of the rising heart rate during the steep hike to Wauna Point. When topping out, enjoy the thrilling panorama of Tanner Creek below and the verdant mountains above. It’s becoming a real locals favorite.
Go Chase Some Waterfalls – Multnomah and Beyond
Multnomah Falls, one of Oregon’s most decorated and beloved landmarks, was mercifully unscathed by the fires. This 620-foot waterfall is still standing tall and gorgeous. The trail leading up to the bridge overlooking Multnomah is a fairly easy and popular one. However, locals often prefer to venture further, escaping the crowds by continuing on the trail to the top of the falls and beyond, where they’re rewarded with lesser-known falls such as Fairy Falls and Ecola Falls. Don’t forget to savor a quiet moment by Wahkeena falls on the return trip.
Take a Journey on The Historic Columbia River Highway
A local secret is to abandon Highway I-84, and go for the Historic Columbia River Highway instead. This scenic road boasts perfect vistas of the Gorge and takes you to some of the lesser-known trailheads, like Oneonta and Bridal Veil. A surprise awaits every few bends, keep a lookout for the hidden waterfalls known only to true Gorge dwellers.
Don’t Forget the Forest Therapy at Eagle Creek
A unique trait of Oregon is the melodious rustling of the unidentified bird species chirping in the background and the sight of untouched flora and fauna. The Eagle Creek trail provides just that with its lush greenery and serene ambiance. The tragic 2017 and 2024 wildfires have left their mark, not damaging, but actually enhancing the region’s natural beauty. This trail offers one of the most rewarding experiences, inviting hikers to leave the world behind and descend into serenity and tranquility.
Seasonality in the Columbia River Gorge
One thing we Oregonians know is that our region varies so much by season, and it’s definitely no different for the gorge. Spring’s known for the most spectacular display of wildflowers, Summer brings slightly warm conditions perfect for breezy picnics by the river, Fall is a melody played on the oboe with leaves turning shades of gold, and Winter while absolutely breathtaking, tends to get very chilly and slippery. Pack and dress accordingly, because Mother Nature frequently likes to remind us she’s the boss.
Safety First; Fun, A Close Second
Oregon’s beauty is matched equally by her wild, unpredictable nature. Remember trail etiquette, keep a safe distance from cliff edges, and remember that while wildfires are a natural event, human-triggered wildfires are unfortunately a common and avoidable danger. Staying on the marked trails, disposing of trash properly, and ensuring campfires are completely distinguished are measures we encourage everyone to adhere to. Most importantly, be prepared with plenty of water, sunscreen, and snacks on your stroll through our backyard.
