1. Pine Mountain Observatory
Just 26 miles southeast of Bend, the Pine Mountain Observatory is run by the University of Oregon. Amateur astronomers will appreciate the guided, informative star tours offered here. Just remember to bring warm clothes as the mountain chill can sneak up on you.
2. Central Oregon
If you’re near Bend, Sisters, or Sunriver, head out to a favorite locals’ spot for watching celestial bodies: the Badlands Wilderness. With minimal light pollution, it’s an excellent backdrop for your stargazing activities. Be sure to pack some provisions from The Bend Store before you go.
3. Wapinitia Pass
Perched at an elevation of over 2,600 feet, Wapinitia Pass offers splendid panoramas of the night sky. A short drive from The Dalles and Maupin, it’s preferable to arrive early to snag the best spot.

A popular daytime destination for waterfalls, Silver Falls State Park, just an hour south of Portland, is also a sublime place for night sky viewing. Do check park timings and rules before planning your visit.
5. Alvord Desert
Tucked away in southeastern Oregon, the dry Alvord Desert is acclaimed for its dark skies. Set up camp at the Fields Station and gear up for a spectacular overnight stargazing experience.
6. Maury Mountains
Wander off the beaten path and into the Maury Mountains in Central Oregon. Check out the lunar-like landscape while you’re there – it’s just as captivating as the constellations overhead.

Accompany your skiing trip to Mount Bachelor with a starry night spectacle. Visit the area’s local watering hole, The Clearing Rock Bar, to warm up on those cold winter nights.
