Family-Friendly Outdoor Adventures in Oregon
As a fellow Oregon lover, the beauty of our state never ceases to amaze me. From the rugged coastline to the sprawling vineyards, cascading waterfalls, and snow-capped mountains, the Beaver State is packed with outdoor adventures that are perfect for families who share our love for nature.
1. Explore Crater Lake National Park
Crater Lake, with its impossibly blue waters, is a must-see. Start at the Rim Village visitor center for helpful insights on trail options and hikes. For a little less traffic and a whole lot of fun, take the family on the Godfrey Glen Trail, an easy 1-mile loop that offers panoramic views of the park.
2. Go Berry Picking on Sauvie Island
Late spring and summer seasons are perfect for berry picking. Head over to Sauvie Island, just 30 minutes from downtown Portland, with farms open for family-friendly cherry and berry picking. Columbia Farms and Kruger’s Farm Market are local favorites!
3. Discover Haystack Rock in Cannon Beach
This famous rock formation is an icon for Oregon’s vivid coastline. Children love to explore the myriad marine life in tide pools during low tide. Remember, marveled as you may be, don’t disturb the nesting Tufted Puffins!
4. Hike Mount Hood’s Trillium Lake
With a postcard-perfect view of the snow-capped Mount Hood, a hike around Trillium Lake will become a family favorite. This easy 2-mile loop trail is stroller-friendly and offers fishing spots and picnic areas.
5. Visit The Portland’s Children’s Museum
On rainy days, head indoors to Portland’s Children’s Museum. It’s a hands-on creative environment with various exhibits and art activities. Don’t miss the Outdoor Adventure exhibit – an immersive, 1.3-acre nature-based play space.
6. Go Camping at Silver Falls State Park
Silver Falls has lots to offer – tent and cabin camping, miles of hiking trails, and ten astounding waterfalls. Families enjoy the Trail of Ten Falls, a moderate 7-mile loop that will take you behind four of the Park’s stunning cascades – an Oregonian marvel!
7. Walk the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area
Families can’t resist the thrill of exploring the Oregon Dunes, covering 40 miles along the coastline. Try sandboarding or simply enjoy a unique walk on these natural wonders. Dune buggies can be a blast, but don’t forget sand adventure etiquette to protect endangered species!
8. Visit Wildlife Safari in Winston
An exciting outdoor experience in Southern Oregon is a trip to Wildlife Safari. The 600-acre park hosts over 500 animals from all over the world. Get up close with giraffes during their feeding time – a memorable experience for every kiddo!
9. Explore Smith Rock State Park
For the adventurous family, Smith Rock offers stunning views and various hikes. Misery Ridge trail is recommended for older kids, but the River Trail offers a flat and accessible path everyone can enjoy.
